The New Year 2011

The New Year, Japanese people pay the first visit of the year to shrines and temples.

Relatives living far away gather to celebrate the New Year and taste the special food.

There is a temple the thousand Samurais whose descendants gather every 2 months.

Now, I should talk about a lady. She is Seki Yamamoto and a daughter in the ten

highest position Samurais.  Lady Seki gave many kindness, food and clothes to the

poor families. She was modest.  She's never married. Her only pleasure was drinking

Sake(=alcohol) a little bit. One year, Influenza raged. Many coughed violently.

Lady Seki nursed them all through nights and prayed. But, she was unfortunately

infected.  She died praying and the beautiful shape became a stone.  Do you know

her name "Seki" has another meaning? "Seki" also means "cough".  She is now

in a tiny sanctuary.  This winter season, Flu might be raging.  She was also frank.

Please just say "Hi" , put Sake in the bamboo container and offer to Lady Seki.

If you suffered from cough, I believe Lady Seki would relieve you.

I went to Nikko the other day. Snowfalling a little. I make it rule to visit

Nikko in Winter. The cold weather was hard for the thousand knights, the duty.

Their residence was on Nishi-Sandou (West entrance path) or close to Nikko

Bugyo-sho (= the magistrate's office). Please go up Nishi-Sandou and you

come to the fork. Take the right way leading to Futara-San Shrine. In the

sanctuary, you can meet the haunted lantern. It is the oldest lantern in

Nikko made more than 800 years ago. Once upon a time, the knights were

going around for the duty. One night, the eerie figure came out in the dark.

The knight watched someone suspicious drew his sword and cut it. He saw

it at close range. It was just a lantern. There's a legend that the lantern

transforms itself soon after the ignition by the oil. Many knights must have

watched the eerie figure. The lantern has more than 70 sword cuts. Now,

I am much interested in " who cut it". Tell me when you got to know

"who".   14 Jan, 2011

Jan. 22, I guided a Belgian pro recorder player, Nathalie Houtman  to

Dan Shinku's gallery. Dan Shinku's WebSite Dan is a Shakuhachi player

making his own prominent art.I met Nathalie at Takao Station and

accompanied her.  Nathalie has been studying Shakuhachi for a year

in Paris and has the great interest in it.  Dan and Me belong to a NPO

revitalizes one region in Hachioji-shi, Tokyo by Music, Folktales and

Charcoal Making. The region has the long history and a beautiful forest.

Mt. Jinba, the summit with a fine view is close. There is a recreation

facility fits the surroundings. To guide her is an important activity of

the NPO. Dan welcomed Nathalie, professional recorder player from

Europe, gave a lecture about his own art and played. At first,

She was going to come with her friend, a Japanese musician who plays

Shakuhachi as the interpreter.  But, the musician became busy and did

not come. Playing Shakuhachi is connected with the thought of Zen.

That is very deep. I don't have the knowledge of Shakuhachi.  I am

sorry that I was not able to give her the sufficient explanation. Dan

is saying now that systematizes the lecture for Foreigners. Nathalie

and the friend would come again in Spring, the flowers come into

blossom and the region is most beautiful.I am looking forward many

people visit the region and Dan's gallery soon.    27 Jan, 2011

I was a New Yorker.New York is my life.  Let me introduce my favorite food

in the fascinating city. Anyway, you should go to East Village, Manhattan.

I took up residence first in the district. Veniero's (342E. 11th st. /

bet. 1st&2nd Aves) is a Cafe and a Confectionary. Come into it.

You can meet various tasty pastries. Take up a number ticket and

wait for your turn. Your number is called out. And, you can order the favorite.

Take Subway! Let's go to Little Italy!! Luna is an Italian restaurant serves

the homely tastable food. Tasting wine and pasta, Me and an American friend

of mine had a chat about the then Prime Minister of Japan. Eating a bite-sized

eclair, explore Little Italy further. I often saw the stands of pastries on

Mulberry St. Do you know that Hachioji-shi, Tokyo I was born and grew up

is called "Mulberry City"? That results from the textile the local industry.

The sericulture was flourishing.

Pizza is my most favorite!! I recommend Lombardi's and John's Pizzeria.

A pizza restaurant close to Brooklyn Bridge is most famous in NY, I guess.

I've been there once. However, the restaurant was very crowded. And,

we didn't try it then. Have you been to Pete's Tavern in Greenwich Village

a well-known writer O.Henry(1862~1910) stopped by?  I haven't. I regret it.

O.Henry's short stories the plots are superb take me to the 19century's

Manhattan.

Now, I've recommended some tasty restaurants. However, I visited them

8 or 9 years ago. I'm not sure they are still fine. Please visit them. If

they are fine and going well, I will be full. 12 Feb, 2011

Yesterday, A big earthquake hit the Tohoku and the Kanto region in Japan.

Off the coast of Miyagi prefecture is the hypocenter. Magnitude 8.8!!

The quake didn't stop soon. I hid myself under the desk. Moreover,

the aftershocks come every 10 or 15 minites. Still now, I feel it.

I was scared.  And, everybody must've be scared. Some cities along

the coast were destroyed completely by Tsunami. Do you know how to stop

the natural calamity before it happens? That is the most important. If not,

how to deal with the calamity locally is necessary to think in advance.

12 Mar, 2011

I am so grateful for your concern about the earthquake of this time.

Living in Tokyo now, no one I know was injured. However, I could not

say that I am doing well. The nuclear power station along the coast

blew up and the radioactivity leaked. The important problem is the

air contamination. Moreover, Last night, the earthquake happened

at another region Mt.Fuji is in. The calamity is not another person's

or region's matter. Still now, the aftershocks come. I'd be lying if

I said I'm not scared of it. When would this situation come to the end?

Now, I remember the thousand Samurais were not only strongest

warriors but also pioneers. I am one of them. I take an oath I'm never

defeated by the natural calamity. Thank you.     16 Mar, 2011

My Dear the late firefighters of NYFD;

The nuclear power station blew up by Tsunami. Today,

the Self-defense Forces of Japan has watered in the used fuel pool

by Helicopters and Fire engines to cool down. It is difficult and dangerous

to approach the building by the radioactivity. The brave you who came in

the World Trade Center on that day, I know. Now, I am sure that you come

The Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant is in dangerous conditions yet. Many

foreign people left Japan.  All of you use the electricity by the nuclear power now.

I have to say that the breakdown of Nuclear reactor is the international issue.

Don't you think about it with us?  A few days ago, A remote-control robot came.

The work in the dangerous reactor is robot's duty, first of all. Now, I have found

the most qualified robot. The honor is R2appeares in the movie “Star Wars".

If a dozen R2s came to Fukushima, the breakdown would be fixed soon.

The Star Festival TANABATA is held on July 7. It is based on a Chinese legend that

Altair (the star of the herdsman) and Vega (the star of the weaver-princess),

separated on opposite sides of the Milky Way,meet once a year on this day.

Children write their wishes on strips of fancy paper and display them on the

branches of bamboo trees. The weather forecast says it will be raining here

on the night. Altair and Vega can not meet if it was bad weather. I expect

that they cross the Milky Way and can meet in your country. July 7, 2011

We would like to travel to your countries and have a lot of fun. It is just the time

because the exchange rate of the yen has been rising. However, many Japanese

would lose jobs if the situation lasted. We look forward you to coming and having

a lot of fun in Japan. But, the high exchange rate for the yen might stop your visit.

Now, I have a strong favor to ask the foreign investors. Aug 9, 2011

Hachioji Kuruma Puppet Theater is my home town’s historical performing art.

In 2003, I saw this in New York with my American friend. Kuruma Puppet,

a unique form of Puppet theater, was created by Nishikawa Koryu in the late

Edo period. In 1861, after he acquired the bunraku puppet technique,

Nishikawa Koryu invented his own technique. Nishikawa Koryu? who was

Koryu?’s apprentice formed Hachioji Kuruma Puppet Theater in 1872.

In 1924, he moved his company to my home town Hachioji, the western

suburb of Tokyo, where it has been located ever since.

Sanbaso is a joyful dance by two puppets that gives thanks to the gods

praying for a future of prosperity and peace. Also, Sanbaso is performed

on a specific celebratory occasions, such as the New Year or the opening

of a new theater.

Kuzunoha(The kuzu leaf) from a Japanese folktale. A white fox secretly

turned into a beautiful woman in order to repay a favor to the man who

had saved her life. The man and the woman lived, happily married and

had a son. They had been living happily until one day, the son accidentally

saw his mother a white fox.  As her son realized that his mother is not

a human, she decided to leave her family and returned to the forest

with sorrow. A message was on a shoji screen.?If you think of me with love,

come and visit me in the forest. You will find a kuzu leaf and read my sadness”.

Tokaido-chu Hizakurige (Strange Adventure on the Road to Kyoto)

is based on a bestselling comic novel from the late Edo period (1603-1868).

This novel tells the journey of Yajirobei and Kitahachi, who are also known

as Yaji-san and Kita-san, a pair of footloose commoners traveling from the city

of Edo (Tokyo), bound for Western Japan on the Tokaido road . Their journey

is filled with amusements and challengers. The writer, Jippensha Ikku

( 1765- 1831)wrote this original novel adopting the humor and satire.

Tokaido-chu Hizakurige was most popular in the three plays. Yaji and Kita

are funny. The audiences laughed. By the way, do you know that the writer,

Jippensha Ikku whose father was one of the thousand Samurais ?

Yaji & Kita went on the journey with difficulty happened to stop. And,

looked up and said, “ Where are we? Here is Japan Society in New York.

We are in New York!! ” Over the Pacific Ocean, crossing the Continent

of America, I believed that my company,Jippensha Ikku sent Yaji-san

and Kita-san for me. Hachioji Kuruma Puppet Theater 2003 in NY

CrestOnce upon a time, there was a charcoal making master whose name is

“ Santaro “ Santaro was walking everyday in the bamboo forest to

collect materials of charcoal. One night, he happened to find a shinning

bamboo. Santaro had never seen such a  beautiful thing. “ What’s that? ”

He cut the bamboo and was so surprised. A little girl was in it. “ So cute!!

But, who are you? “ Santaro took the little girl to his lord. The day was

November 13, and a full moon was bright. The lord named the cute
